Another Glass Ceiling Has Been Broken.

“It always helps to have a genius for a director ... She (Bigelow) obviously took the work and knocked it out of the park.”
-- Mark Boal on Kathryn Bigelow.

Here's to Kathryn Bigelow for being the first woman to win The Academy Award for Best Director.
and
"She said to be an artist, you had to practice every day, and for reminding her daughters that there’s no race, no religion, no class system, no color, nothing, no sexual orientation that makes us better than anyone else. We are all deserving of love. So, to that trailblazer, who allowed me to have that. And this. And this."
-- Sandra Bullock thanking her mother at as she accepts her Best Actress Academy Award.
Bullock’s winning performance helped make “The Blind Side” the first film with a sole female lead ever to surpass $200 million in US and Canada ticket sales.
----------
I dedicate tonight's blog to two amaaazing trailblazers!!! I am SO INSPIRED to be standing up at The Academy Awards next year!!! This is my time -- our time.

Now.

Dreams are coming glowingly true.

Loooooove to all... And thank you to Kathryn and to Sandra for breaking glass ceilings for the rest of us.

Can't wait to break one myself. Very, very soon.

[OFFICIAL] Michael Jackson Dance Tribute - STOCKHOLM

This Flash Mob is proof that when you work hard and put your money where your dreams are and when you create art to inspire people... they hear you.

You are money. Spend wisely.

"In all realms of life it takes courage to stretch your limits, express your power, and fulfill your potential.. it's no different in the financial realm."
-- Suze Orman

My blades, I was thinking of what to write tonight... This morning, I sat at Downbeat Cafe in Echo Park and I thought, what am I going to write about tonight? And what came to me was $$$. I thought about some key financial moves I have made lately that have been making ALL the difference in my career and thus life -- and I wanted to share them with you. I hope you all find this inspiring because I have honestly been seeing huge changes in my life as a result of giving more, paying more (attention) and money for/towards what I want in my life.

There was a time when I thought, I am done with buying new headshots, or I am SO not doing another class, or coaching are you f-ing kidding me? Or new clothes specifically for auditions -- well, maybe I'd do that. But, basically, I felt like I was in a sense "over" these things.

And the truth is, we HAVE to know our WORTH. That we are STARS. We have to. But think about it -- the greatest  athletes and the greatest thinkers, they all surround themselves with coaches. With great writers or mentors or trainers or managers or coaches. Nutritionists or lawyers, accountants. They pick the creme de la creme.

And they invest in themselves. Which means they put their money where their dreams are.

1. Put your money where your dream is.
I was thinking the other day of what differentiated my experience in LA with my experience in NYC. As an artist. And I thought -- in NYC, I spent $ on the best head shots possible. I'd gotten referrals to The Hoberman Studio. And they took great shots. They cost money, good money, for the kid that I was when I was studying in NYC. But I made it happen. Make it work. Because I have always believed in quality. My parents may have been teachers, so we weren't exactly flowing in the millions, but they knew quality in their souls. And they instilled this appreciation in us. Thy tended to our instincts. And my sister and I grew up with a keen sense of quality.

My mom would literally turn the clothes that I bought our mall, this was Jersey after all :) inside out and check the hems for quality. If the garment in question did not fit her liking, she would absolutely have me return it.

And so I would trek to the mall again and sheepishly return said item. Probably some slinky Macy's brand shirt. Never to be seen again...

Needless to say, I took this instinct with to my acting class in NYC as well. And I studied with Freddy Kareman. One of the absolute best. He has trained some amazing actors... Maria Bello, Marisa Tomei amongst the stars... And every month, I made it work. Babysitting and coat checking and personally assisting Joel Siegel at GMA. I always paid up. And the quality was high.

And lately, I have re-committed to this belief. This age-old knowledge.

I got the new headshots, which have received fantastic reviews. I met with a GREAT CASTING Thursday and the first thing she said when I passed it across the table to her was, "This is a fantastic head shot."

Guys, I have not heard that since NYC. I have Paul Smith the great photographer to thank. And his talented make-up artist, Sarai Fiszel. And the amazing Whitney Rosen -- my friend who came to my house the morning of my second shoot and she did my make-up and hair perfectly!!!

I also want to apologize to her because in a bleary blog, I called her Whitney Rose by accident -- probably because she is such a rose :) But alas, her name os Rosen. And she f'in rooooocks!!! I SO recommend her to all of you if you are looking for a hair and make-up artist.

p.s. -- The headshot the CD loved was from the shoot I insisted in doing -- my own instinct that I needed another look with great hair and make-up and this headshot is now my TV/Film headshot and it is getting raves!!! Listen to your instincts.

And the thing is, Paul is the most expensive headshot photography I have ever worked with in LA and he is hands down the best in my experience. And you know what, he was worth every single penny. And then some. One job -- I book one movie or one TV show and suddenly, I've got $50,000.00 versus like grand when all hair and make-up and copies are made. It is beyond worth it.

It is an investment in you.

2. Focus.
I was realizing the other night as I prepared for a super sexy juicy fun audition on Friday at noon that I can SO easily let myself get distracted and text an emoticon on my IPhone or I'll facebook chat with someone or obsessively check my gmail. And why? Because these distractions feel like they are temporarily from getting into the juice -- into what it is we really want. And sometimes what we want most is also a little scary. And so doing little things to avoid our dreams is like a little game we play with ourselves.

But working on my memoir and today, I actually spent over an hour on the role that I read for on Friday because I was like, wait a second -- I did not spend enough time personalizing this to make this extraordinary. It was good. And fun. And she liked it. But -- if they call me back -- I am going to KILL IT. I know what I am going to wear. I know who I am talking to and where I am and why I am saying it. I found the sugar tonight.

And this all takes the focus of, once again, an athlete. We have to have killer instincts. And follow them. Time and time again, I hear stories of the most successful people and regardless of their field of work, they are the ones who stay later, arrive earlier and put all of their passions into what they love.

And this takes focus. And this past week editing and writing my memoir reminded me of the girl I was in college who was doggedly focused. And I wasn't cell phone-y and email-y and certainly not text-y. And so, I'd put on some music that put me in a vibe and I'd write away.

And the same thing with prepping for a role -- focus. Let my thoughts fall around me and make choices that fit best and feel the best. Sound them out. Specify each line. Felt good tonight... And this is planting seeds for a rich (metaphorically and literally) garden of life.

3. Do your homework. When I met with the great Entourage casting director, I had gone on IMDB and researched her. I knew what movies she had in the pipes, who was set to direct, who was writing them, what they were about -- were they true, had they been books, and I knew what awards she had won and how many. And it felt great. It felt great to have a sense of her. And to respect her. To pay homage to her craft. And to honor her skill.

The same thing goes for auditions -- and I constantly remind myself of this -- down to my socks an bracelets, to my personal choices, to my knowledge of the show or the film director. Doing our homework ALWAYS pays off.

Always.

I did a reading of Loose Ends in NYC a few years ago, and I worked super hard on my lines. Little did I know there would be a critic from Playbill.com But sure enough, he was there. And he wrote a glowing review about me! It paid off. I shone.

I am reminding myself of this. I will never regret working hard. Letting my mind spin and imagine and settle only on the best idea. And this is what happened today when I went over my lines again -- I found them today.

So... we shall see. If I get the call-back, I will be SUPER stoked. Because I will blow them away. I know what I am doing now. Really know. The above and beyond know. And this is what I am up for. Isn't this what we are all up for in our lives? Th above and beyond? Whether we are stay at home moms or college students or directors or coaches or actors or writers or editors or producers or entrepreneurs or small business owners... We strive for the above and beyond.

Let us see... Perhaps HBO hears my words in this nine o'clock hour and they'll call me back in next week -- Something about that girl. As I go over my lines Saturday night... Always working on my craft, always getting better. More specific. More sparkling.

I hope this finds you all inspired. Sending you all great vibes full of LOVE.

And let us all remember these 3 juicy lessons tonight. Because we are all of us planting seeds today -- Put your money where your dream is, Focus, Do your Homework -- that shall become the garden of our souls tomorrow. Plant wisely and lovingly and with every molecule in your body. After all, we are lucky to be here. Let's make this trip as extraordinary as humanly possible. And then some.

Love... always.

Our words, No coincidences, and Scare Myself.

"I will create as I speak."
what Abracadabra  means in in Aramaic.

Hello my little blades... I have a GREAT audition tomorrow at noon -- and a 10am coaching session for it -- because of my RAD casting director meeting today!!!

So... send me prayers for it :):):) And I shall send them all back your ways!

1. Our words. I learned in class last night that Abracadabra means "I will create as I speak." And I find these words to be genius. We are indeed always creating as we speak. And so -- we must always be conscious of how we speak of ourselves and our dreams and our loves of our life -- because we either create a heaven or a hell on earth with our words. They are absolutely our most powerful means of communication.  And of creating our lives. I remember saying what college I wanted to attend. Or what guy I wanted to date. Or that I really, really wanted a job. There's sometimes a fear that if we say it, then we risk it not happening. But the truth I have found is that I would always rather risk it and work my arse off than to cower from fear.

Certainty about where we are heading -- begins with our words. I remember having a healing session last year around this time -- and the amazing Jessica said to me, "Be careful of how you speak of yourself. Not to put yourself down or belittle yourself." She told me to speak of myself and my dreams glowingly.

And today, in the meeting, I did. And this is the first time I have walked out of a general meeting with a great audition -- maybe since I was living in NYC.

Words. They are how we express to the great wide world who we are and why we are here.

2. No coincidences. I SO have experienced in my life that there are absolutely no coincidences. Only as I've said before, the "divinity of timing."

And yesterday, I was in Coffee Bean editing my memoir, and I mentioned my friend Ty Buckelew's name out loud -- because he lived in this same town a guy from Coffee Bean lived in in New Jersey. And I hadn't heard from Ty in like 6 or more months. I come home and check my email and voila! Ty has sent out an email about a new job overseas.

And this kind of synchronicity happens ALL THE TIME. And I honestly believe it's only a matter of our honoring this MAGIC. Being aware of it. And this is one great thing I am noticing with myself more lately. I am more aware than I have been... Reading signs on the street and getting way few tickets than back in the day -- I think I got one ticket in all of last year.

And also, when we pray for someone or settle our minds and let our thoughts roam towards someone, suddenly we hear from them.

Magic.

So, this audition tomorrow -- it's the network I love most. A super cool and smart NYC casting director. Great, juicy, fun lines. And I am READY.

I juuuust wrote in an email to a friend two days ago what I want to do with my career -- and I mentioned this network. Tomorrow, I read for a role that could begin a whole new dream...

3. Scare myself. Every day, I've decided to do something that scares myself. I don't mean like running down an alley with a scary homeless man at my heels and me asking him to tea. (Totally random mind flow there!) But -- I mean like today, I emailed my manuscript to an agent and an editor -- after perfecting it as best I could. And it scared me. But the thing is, I drove around today with extra spring in my step. And when I played pink pong little Harrison whom I tutor -- he's actually close to 6 ft tall, but he's only 14 -- and thus, he is little. We played ping pong at his house when we were done tutoring -- and even ping pong was better! My whole walk is shifted -- because two human beings are out there, reading my work -- work that I have been working towards since college!

And so knowing this, knowing that I finally had the courage and the discipline -- and also that the timing was "divine" -- it just makes the world more colorful, it spins more gracefully... It's like taking a risk makes you feel more alive.

And who doesn't want that?

And so, my little blades... I send you all love. And I am SO stoked for tomorrow!!!

I shall be thinking of you all and all of the love you give me just by reading my words and the fact that they inspire you at all -- this means the world to me. And when I walk into that casting office, I will be walking with all of you right behind me.

Loooove... always.

The Perfectionist.

"Art is never finished, only abandoned."
-- Leonardo Da Vinci

Tonight my little blades... I am off to sleeeeep... Stupidly long day. Amazingly inspiring and juicy with some stunning synchronicities and I shall delve into them tomorrow!

For now, I was just looking over my memoir -- before I send it out -- and I totally get what Da Vinci was saying -- sometimes you just have to abandon your art because it is obsessive to keep picking at it sometimes...

Like an artistic open wound. Zoiks! And thus, I am alllllmmmosssttt done with it. I have decided on the following:

1. Final Edit. I am going to read through the entire 51 pages once more before sending it off. I will also edit the cover letter. And then, with a prayer and all of my love, I shall send it off -- to the editor and the agent!!!

2. The Scholarship. I am going to also send part of this excerpt to Breadloaf -- the amaaaazing writer's conference I attended last summer -- as part of my application for the brand new scholarship they are offering.

3. The Casting Director. I am meeting with her tomorrow at 12noon. Entourage casting director! Very exciting!!!

More juicy things happened... and tomorrow, after my walk with Gatsby and after my final edits for my memoir, I shall sit down cozily on my couch and write a juicy blog about all of the amaaazingly exciting things that have been abounding -- honestly, they are mind-blowing!!! Manager referral, HUGE audition referral, lawyer phone call... Lots of great stuff!!!

Love always... And always know how much it means to me to have you all reading my blog. The world :):):)

The Editor, The Agent, & The Epilogue.

“Cathy I'm lost I said though I knew she was sleeping
I'm empty and aching and I don't know why
Counting the cars on the New Jersey Turnpike
They've all come to look for America.”
--- America, Simon and Garfunkel

Hey my little blades... I have been remiss and did not blog yesterday -- and thus, I have two to make up tomorrow! Which I shall. Indeed.

1. The Editor. I have been working away at my memoir. And I have the opening. Yay!!! And it ready to send to the editor -- amaaaazing editor -- tomorrow. She requested 40 pages. And all I have to do for her is to write a proposal/description of the memoir. And bam! I am sending that one off. The RAD thing is that I emailed her on Friday, kind of late in the day, because I had some friends in from out of town and they stopped by and so, I got to my computer late. I emailed her to tell her that I was ready to send it. And how many pages would she like to see. And Monday morning when I checked my email, she was one of the first messages and telling me that "40 is great. Thanks!" And she is a BIG DEAL EDITOR. I feel SUPER STOKED to get my memoir to her. This has honestly been a dream of mine since I was little. A dream of mine - to honor my mom and write about her and share her story. To inspire and excite people, move them, lift them up and make them feel life, live it through my stories -- which will invariably become their stories. In other words, they are only my stories until the moment I share them and then, they are all of our stories. I love that about art. Once shared, it is given away and not possessed, it becomes universal. It becomes everyone's  life in a way, everyone's story. That we all share in. Are all a part of. And I am learning that the most courageous thing we can do is to share our story -- because there is always someone out there who will hear it and be inspired. And feel less alone and more connected to the world around us. I learned that in an acting class actually -- when I got up and did a monologue that I thought was so me. So Kieren. That's all. No one else's story. But as I made my way back to my seat, both the Latina model and my beloved New York teacher each pulled me aside separately and said, "That monologue is so me. Thank you." I was stunned. Good stunned. It comes from courage.

And I, my friends, am FINALLY submitting this story that has been inside of me since Barnard. I got a Grant from The Ford Foundation to write it and now, I am ready to share it. This is the year. Fearless.

Or as I read that Matthew Perry said, "Feel the fear and do it anyway."

So, the editor will have my complete, shining excerpt in her beloved inbox before 4pm PST. Yayayayayayay!!! I have worked hard and long to be able to say that. The time has come. And I am thrilled.

The Agent. So, this amaaazingly generous editor also referred me to a great literary agent in New York. One of the best. And when I emailed her also late on Friday, she also wrote me back and I had it in my inbox first thing Monday morning. She told me she'd like to read "between 50 and 75 pages." And was SUPER prompt as well.

The thing is, the universe hears us, guys. When we are serious and committed, the universe hears us. And people respond. It's like they can sniff our change inside of us. It pours out of a frickin' email. It is MAGIC. Energy is felt. It travels. It is magical...

And so, I am going to send her between 50 and 60 pages. I am still editing the extra chapter that I am putting in her excerpt. And thus, I still have to see how much I shall expand on it. I  And if I need more than  that, I have some other great chapters I am SO excited to add as well. Tomorrow I shall have my memoir out to BOTH OF THEM. Words I have dreamt of saying since college!!!

3. The opening. The last words on this blog are the first lines of my memoir, the epilogue actually. It will be the first page, the first words they both read. Ahhhhhhhhhhh... :):):)

I wrote these words as part of my novel about my mom in college. And they are finally getting their due. Hopefully they will both dig. My words. Honoring my mom. And my memoir/non-fiction novel... Yay!!!!!!

And thus, tomorrow, March 3rd is a BIG DAY. And my birthday is 8 days from tomorrow. And I am planning a party and I shall let you all know.

Looooove... Always...

p.s. The quote is my favourite line in a song. Because it is utterly disarming, honest. Saying what we feel deepest because we know the person to whom we are telling our scariest secrets is sleeping... So lovely what S & G captured in this song. Plus, my memoir is very much the American Story. And so, the quote feels perfect.

And now, I sing to her. I sing in the midnight hour of Mississippi, to the shortly trimmed lawns and the standing hair appointments, to the swimming pool at the grammar school, to the sweet tea my mom once sipped, to my grandfather’s grocery store, now a chain in the South, to the bus ride my mom and her big brother and sister took past the playground with the swing set. I sing to the girl who was nine when she came to America. Whose words whisper to me closely tonight and beg me to run, to sample, to live until the earth below me sags under my feet and I am weary in my grave.

Memoir In The Midst.

Dave Eggers
